Antón García-Abril (ensamble studio): ‘Stones + Beams’

State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart
‘Ensamble Studio’ is developing architecture that uses technology with a new insight, from local site specific proposals to global synthetic systems. The structure, the assembly, the scale of the material, are explored affecting the resultant space, trying to achieve effective processes of construction and the maximum expressiveness with the fewer resources. The scale of proposals range from installations or small interventions in historical buildings to the design of towers, collective housing systems or cities.

‘The Immeuble Cité’

Elia Zenghelis, 1937 born in Athens, studied and taught for 20 years at the Architectural Association in London and in numerous well-known international Universities and still teaches at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. He is one of the original founders of OMA in partnership with Rem Koolhaas until 1987, when he established Gigantes Zenghelis Architects in Athens and Brussels with Eleni Gigantes. He was awarded the RIBA Annie Spink Award for outstanding contribution to architectural education in 2001. Architecture is the servant of political authority; within a post-graduate framework it is legitimate to re-examine and question the tenets of current global political structures and to project alternative models. The main purpose of such inquiries would be to encourage young architects to be harbingers of the future.

An architect, engineer and agit-prop, Carlo Ratti (born 1971) practices in Torino, Italy, and teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA, where he directs the ‘Senseable City Laboratory’. He founded this MIT research group that explores the ‘real-time city’ by studying the increasing deployment of sensors and hand-held electronics, and their relationship to the built environment. The group’s work on cities and technology was featured in many exhibitions and received world-wide attention. Ratti’s activity in Italy has embraced a number of civic advisory projects and in 2007, he became a member of the Italian Design Council.
